We have been telling hotel owners for years that review response time affects OTA ranking. But telling and showing are different things. Over a 12-month period ending March 2026, we tracked response time data from 200 economy and midscale properties in our portfolio and cross-referenced it against ranking movement on Booking.com and Expedia. Here is what we found. How We Defined Response Time We measured the median hours between a review being posted and a management response being published. We excluded properties that had platform-side delays (some OTA review moderation can hold reviews for 24–48 hours before publishing). The sample was 200 properties across 14 states, all economy or midscale, all with between 40 and 150 rooms. What the Data Showed We segmented properties into three groups: fast responders (median response under 24 hours), mid responders (24–72 hours), and slow responders (72+ hours). We then compared their ranking positions at the start and end of each 90-day period. The Mechanism Behind It OTA algorithms don't directly reward response time — they reward engagement signals that correlate with guest satisfaction and conversion probability. A property that responds to 90% of reviews within 24 hours is consistently outperforming one that responds to 40% within a week, and those engagement patterns show up as stronger quality scores over time.
